Objective
Checkmate your opponent's king — put it under attack with no escape.
How to Play
1Setup
- Place the board so a white square is in the bottom-right corner.
- Each player starts with 16 pieces: 1 king, 1 queen, 2 rooks, 2 bishops, 2 knights, and 8 pawns.
- White always moves first.
2How Pieces Move
- King: one square in any direction.
- Queen: any number of squares in any direction.
- Rook: any number of squares horizontally or vertically.
- Bishop: any number of squares diagonally.
- Knight: in an "L" shape — 2 squares in one direction then 1 square perpendicular. Knights can jump over pieces.
- Pawn: one square forward (two squares on its first move). Captures diagonally one square forward.
3Special Moves
- Castling: move the king two squares toward a rook; the rook jumps to the other side. Neither piece may have moved before, and the king must not be in check.
- En passant: if a pawn moves two squares forward and lands beside an opponent's pawn, the opponent may capture it as if it had moved only one square.
- Promotion: when a pawn reaches the last rank, replace it with any piece (usually a queen).
4Winning
- Check: the king is under attack. The player must escape check immediately.
- Checkmate: the king is in check and has no legal move — that player loses.
- Stalemate: a player has no legal moves but is not in check — the game is a draw.
